-- Jase BOLGER, candidate in the 63rd House District, when asked what the stakes were in his friendly wager with brother Matt BOLGER of the Michigan State Police over who would get QOD first.

Bolger Plays To Win

Jase BOLGER and little brother, Matt BOLGER, have always been competitive growing up. Whether it was in sports or who would get the better seat at the Thanksgiving dinner table, the boys were boys.

Now, with Matt Bolger being the legislative liaison for the Michigan State Police (MSP) and Jase, 37, being the Republican nominee in the 63rd House District, they have a new friendly wager.

"It's to see who can get Quote of the Day first," Jase said.

"And what if you happened to get it?" he was asked.

"You would make one brother a very happy man," he responded.

So let's take care of the first question first. Big brother's first name is legally "James," a name passed down from his father, who went by Jim. To avoid confusion, the Bolgers used an abbreviated version of James and came up with Jase (rhymes with "ace").

Bolger has gone by Jase his whole life, but had trouble with the Secretary of the State's office when he tried to register for the ballot as "Jase," since it wasn't his legal name. After some back-and-forth, Bolger dropped the issue and is going by James. But like the first day of school, Bolger has repeated the "Jase" story dozens of times on the campaign trail.

After the name thing is cleared up, the next big issue brought up (no surprise) is jobs and the economy.

As the owner of Summit Credit Services, Bolger can relate. Summit is a 20-employee outfit that updates telephone records for major corporations. It's a niche market, but one that's not offered in many other locations. His clients are national and international. Technically, he could locate anywhere, but the Charlotte native loves Michigan and he isn't going to leave.

Opening up his new Michigan Business Tax (MBT) bill, however, and seeing a 30 percent increase from last year's Single Business Tax certainly wasn't the "thank you" present he was looking for.

"Who would have thought we'd be one of the fortunate ones?" Bolger said. "I'm talking to business owners who are paying more by multipliers -- two, three, four times more than what they were paying before."

The 12-year small business owner said he would remain as president of his company if elected, a status that term-limited Rep. Lorence WENKE (R-Richland) also decided to keep with his greenhouse business when he served.

Bolger did not run in a contested Republican primary and is facing Vicksburg Democrat Phyllis SMITH. The 63rd House District has a 55 percent Republican base, but in this economic climate, he said he's leaving nothing to chance.

His wife of 15 years, Molly, and his two children -- Nick, 14, and Megan, 12 -- have been knocking the doors with dad for months and they don't plan on stopping until Election Day.

Earlier this year, Bolger turned the family time into a (surprise) competition.

Who could get rid of the most lawn signs to willing homeowners. Megan and Jase both disposed of five a piece.

Jase could claim he won that friendly family game, too.

Overnight on Saturday many 4’ x 8’ Bolger for State Representative signs were ripped from their posts and stolen. In an obvious and coordinated effort the signs were taken from several townships across the district and were missing even when other candidates’ signs were left alone. While some signs are occasionally destroyed as pranks, this was obviously a targeted effort by opponents of James Bolger’s campaign.

“Michigan and our communities are facing very serious issues,” Bolger said, “It is unacceptable that Michigan has the country’s highest unemployment. Instead of playing the political games of my opposition, I am interested in working to bring jobs to our communities.”

Bolger continued, “That’s why I was disappointed this morning to see the usual politics of petty games starting in this race for State Representative. Instead of talking about the serious issues facing our communities my opponents are obviously resorting to the childish, sad, and tired shenanigans practiced for too long in politics.”

Bolger concluded, “Every day as I talk to voters I hear their concern, and I hear their frustrations with politics as usual. So, while my opponents seem eager to play cheap games I am going to continue to work to bring common sense solutions to the real problems we face.”

Bolger to address job crisis during listening tour

State House Candidate James “Jase” Bolger today called for common sense solutions for Michigan businesses and families one year after the historic tax increases and government shutdown. “Never in Michigan’s history has public policy failed on such a personal and fundamental level,” said Candidate James “Jase” Bolger. “After a full year of tax-and-spend politics, Michigan is at 8.9 percent unemployment, leading the nation only where we don’t want to be leading: in jobs lost.”

On Oct. 1, 2007, Michigan’s government was forced to shut down. The shutdown ended after a $1.4 billion Democrat-led tax increase was signed into law.

Bolger continues to urge Lansing to control government spending, hold government and elected officials more accountable, encourage job growth, and create a long-term state spending plan based on common sense priorities and putting our families first. Bolger observed, “You cannot help job seekers by punishing job providers. We need employers now.”

The governor had said it “was a historic vote to put Michigan’s fiscal house in order” that “will allow us to move forward aggressively with our jobs plan to diversify and transform Michigan’s economy.”

One year later, just the opposite occurred. Michigan’s unemployment rate was 7.2 percent in October 2007. Today’s unemployment rate stands at 8.9 percent and small and medium sized businesses, the ones who would diversify our economy, are being hit hardest. Michigan also still faces a $300 million budget deficit. Bolger observed, “In Calhoun County we spend just over $2 per day to feed our inmates. The state pays over $5 to feed their inmates every day. We can and must reign in excessive state spending.”

“As we observe the solemn one-year anniversary of the government shutdown, there is an important real-world lesson to be learned,” Bolger said. “If we didn’t know it before, we’re learning the tough lesson now: you cannot tax or regulate your way to prosperity. Our families are hurting with high prices at the pump, high utility expenses, and growing grocery bills. Since the government shutdown the only things that have gone up are unemployment and costs at home. We must implement common sense solutions to reform government now.”

Door to Door Days

We're having another great week in our efforts to meet voters throughout the 63rd District. Families continue to welcome us, and I've appreciated the chats at doorsteps and kitchen tables and especially the cold water offered on the trail. Families are definitely worried about jobs for themselves, their kids, or their grandchildren. They absolutely want to see some common sense brought to Lansing. I'm glad they continue to believe I have the real world experience needed to do just that.

As we often do, this weekend our entire family went door to door. But this time Nick (14) and Megan (12) wanted to do their own doors and have a competition to see who could get the most yard signs. I thought they were competing against each other, but they ended up also competing against me! Megan won! Although we gave her the tie breaker, I still say she should share her win with me because we tied.

Megan remarked that the day was fun, but some cooler temperatures would make it even more fun. I urged her to not wish the summer away, cooler temperatures will be here soon enough. And, I said, I'm glad to not be wearing snow boots any more while going door to door!

I'm proud of my family, and grateful to have such strong and dedicated support.

Not Enough Name Tags

At the end of July, Sue Moore of Vicksburg hosted a fundraiser for me at her home. What a fantastic night!

We were overwhelmed by the great response. We were planning on about 60 people, but we had so many more people show up then we expected that we ran out of name tags and yard signs. People leaving the party even picked up all the signs marking Sue's property so they could take them home and display them. What a warm reception from the wonderful families in the Vicksburg and Schoolcraft areas!

I am also so pleased to have the support of many current and former elected officials. Don Gilmer showed up early to help us with final setup. Former Senator Paul Wartner sent his support and best wishes. Senator Tom George, former Portage Mayor Betty Ongley, and former Kalamazoo County Clerk and Register of Deeds Jim Youngs all helped us have not only a successful event but a fun evening.

We continue to knock on doors, attend events, and I continue to be humbled by the support and encouragement people from all over the district are showing our campaign and my family.

Parade, Cereal, and Cars

In addition to a very happy Father's Day, our family was busy with fun events this weekend.

On Thursday night we walked in the Cereal City Parade in Battle Creek. The Calhoun GOP had over 75 people walking for various campaigns. We had a great crew representing our campaign most of whom are shown here. Thanks to Molly, Nick, Megan, Taylor, Jenny, Drew, Nick, Noah and Grace!

On Saturday morning Molly, Megan and I were joined by Megan's friend Grace. We strolled through downtown Battle Creek for the World's Longest Breakfast Table. We got to meet several interesting people, and Sugar Bear too! We also helped the Calhoun GOP hand out coffee to many parents in the morning. Grace even had a great quote in the Battle Creek Enquirer in the story covering the event.

Then, on Saturday afternoon Molly, Nick, Megan and I borrowed a nice 1966 Mustang Convertible from Christy and Ted. We drove to Vicksburg to cruise the old car festival downtown. We also stopped for good burgers and great atmosphere at Bobby's Drive-In.

Our family continues to have fun enjoying the campaign and meeting the families in the 63rd District!

Happy Father's Day

I'd like to wish every Dad a Happy Father's Day.

Mine is wrapping up after a restful day with my family and a great meal cooked by Molly and Megan (with cleanup by Nick.) Being a Dad is certainly the most rewarding job I have. In fact, as the saying goes "If you have a job you love you'll never work a day in your life." So, being a Dad is no job at all!

Although it's true every day, today is a day that gives me a chance to think about my Dad and my Father-in-law. My Dad, Jim, has been supportive of me throughout my life. Always making time, always working hard, and always caring about me and my family. As we've dealt with the untimely loss of my Mom last year, he has had to teach me and lead by example for several things neither of us would have wanted or imagined. However, he has always done so with grace, wisdom and strength.

My Father-in-law, Dudley, has blessed me with his wonderful daughter, Molly. I still remember nearly fainting as I asked him for her hand in marriage! He, however, has grown to be my second father. His encouragement and support, especially in this venture, have always meant a very positive difference to me.

So, I hope everyone enjoys their Father's Day as I have. And, I hope you're blessed to be able to enjoy your family the way I do.

New Campaign Plan

Since learning that we're now in an uncontested primary we have continued going door to door to meet new voters. There is nothing that drives home the importance of this election more than listening to our hard working families talk about their concern for jobs in our community.

Along with continuing door to door, we've been working on changes to our campaign plan.

I am a big believer in the adage, "the harder I work, the luckier I get." I also believe in working smart, not just working hard. Especially when it comes to campaigns without a solid plan it would be easy to run in a lot of directions but miss important goals.

Therefore, I believe a key to a winning campaign is a solid plan. Then, each week and even each day I and my campaign organization know what we need to do to help us win the November election.

With the changes in having an uncontested primary, we have been retooling our plan to focus on the general election (for example, many more people vote in general elections than do in primaries). I am very fortunate to have the help of Todd, Mike, Steve, and Rob to offer their insight and experience as we fine tune the new plan.

This week we'll put the finishing touches on the plan. And I'll be looking forward to meeting more voters at community meetings or the doorsteps of their homes!

We're Through the Primary

On Friday we learned that our only primary opponent, former State Representative Jerry VanderRoest, had chosen to withdraw from the race. We first heard this news from a phone call while going Door to Door in Newton Township on Friday at about 4:30pm.

That means we will remain as the only campaign for the Republican nomination on August 5th. So, we're through the Primary and will advance to the November General election.

Of course, everyone in our campaign is very happy, and my family is very excited.

Nick was gone to his Order of the Arrow Ordeal for the Boy Scouts this weekend. So, on Saturday, Molly, Megan and I joined our Campaign Manager Steve for Door to Door in Ross Township. We couldn't think of any better way to celebrate than to visit more voters in the district.

We had planned for and believed we were going to run in a hotly contested primary. This week, however, produced a clearing of the field.

My relief is that the money we've raised and the hours we've spent have paid off already. More importantly, however, this money and effort combined with our continued fundraising and Door to Door can be focused on winning the General Election instead of beating a fellow Republican.

We're now looking forward to continuing our effort to meet with and listen to voters. We expect a strong General Election campaign, and believe we have the Right Experience and the Right Priorities to serve the voters well.

5,000 Voters & One Great Family

Bolger Files for State Representative (Again)

Marshall, MI—Kalamazoo business owner and Calhoun County Commissioner Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, announced that he had filed again today to run for State Representative in the 63^rd District to replace term limited Representative Lorence Wenke, R-Galesburg.

Bolger explained, “Back in January my family drove to Lansing together and I filed to be a candidate on the August 2008 ballot. Unfortunately, we were later informed there was an issue with my name. My parents named me James P. Bolger after my father James B. Bolger. Literally since birth, however, my parents have called me Jase from the abbreviation for James of Jas.”

“I am proud of being named after my Dad, and I’ve always liked the Jase that my parents also gave me so I asked to file as either Jase or Jas. Unfortunately, the Elections Bureau in Lansing would not allow Jase or Jas as a ‘recognized diminutive’ as provided in state statute. Therefore, I had to file again but this time as James Bolger.”

Bolger concluded, “We’ve knocked on the doors of over 4,500 voters so far. Blessing of the Bikes & Door to Door

I had the opportunity to address the crowd gathered for the Blessing of the Bikes in Battle Creek yesterday. It was a great event with over 250 motorcyclists gathered for an annual bike blessing and ride.

I presented a proclamation we passed at the Calhoun County Board last week. The crowd showed their appreciation for our recognition of the many contributions of motorcyclists in our community and our recognition of motorcyclist freedom.

I especially appreciated the chance to address the many veterans present. The event organizers went out of their way to thank our current service men and women, and the many veterans in our community. There was definitely unanimous support for them. Thank you, Robi, for inviting me to be there on Saturday; and for putting together a great event.

Before the event and immediately afterward, we continued our door to door efforts. We've now hit the doors of over 4,000 voters. Thank you Russ for the cold bottle of water; the families in our district are very generous.

The voters continue to be very supportive of our campaign and looking for change in Lansing. If we've not knocked on your door yet, we look forward to talking with you soon.

Fundraiser a Huge Success

What a great night. We had our first fundraiser at the Franke's home on Thursday night. We had beautiful weather, a great setting, and Tom and Marsha are wonderful hosts.

The generosity of our supporters is astounding. We exceeded our goals for dollars raised for the night and the attendance for the event surpassed our hopes and expectations. Excitement is really growing for our campaign and I truly appreciate the strong and deep support so many are showing.

With the success of this event, our total dollars raised for this campaign has now topped $53,000. This certainly isn't the end, but it is well ahead of where we hoped to be at this time.

I was asked by many supporters at this event how things were going. I had to respond that I just don't know what more we could ask for. Many commented on the hard work they're seeing our campaign doing. I'm grateful they are noticing the dedication and effort we are pouring into this campaign, but I'm even more thankful for the many volunteers and contributors who continue to help and support us.

We're running strong but this is a long race. With help and support like this, though, it will continue to be a great and successful experience. Together we can bring the Right Priorities to Lansing.

2,500 Voters and Growing

Last night we were joined by 4 Albion College Republicans as we knocked on doors and listened to voters in the 63rd District.

These guys all worked hard and we all had a great night. Not only was the weather beautiful (I'm glad to no longer be campaigning in snow boots!), but voters were very supportive.

With their hard work we hit the doors of a couple of hundred voters last night. They helped bring our total voters' doors hit to over 2,500. Thanks guys!

We're certainly hearing that voters are worried about jobs. I'm glad voters are saying that as someone who started a small business I have the Right Experience to go to Lansing to work for jobs for our community.

The families in our neighborhoods are incredibly nice and gracious. A cold glass of water was very nice and very generous on the warm night.

Door to Door in Snow Boots

Steve, my campaign manager, and I were just as surprised as everyone else at how long spring is taking to arrive! But, when it comes to meeting voters we sure weren’t going to let a little snow stand in our way.

OK, as I had to push Steve’s car after we got stuck I realized it wasn’t just a little snow!

For the past 3 weeks we’ve been going door to door and talking to voters throughout the entire district. In fact, we’ve talked to voters in every precinct in the district, and found some very long driveways along the way. This past Saturday we drove 200 miles to talk to voters from Marshall to Schoolcraft and everywhere in between. I just think it’s that important to meet voters, look families in the eyes and listen to their concern and their desires.

I have been thrilled at the support voters have already offered me. We’re building our list of yard sign locations so we can come back in the summer and supporters can proudly display their support of our campaign. It has certainly been clear that jobs and the economy is the main concern on voters’ minds.

I am so glad they feel that as someone who started a small business I have the right experience to go to work for their family in Lansing. I look forward to each day that gives me a chance to meet more voters and talk to more people.

Ted Nugent @ WMU

Molly and I joined the WMU College Republicans tonight to enjoy a visit by Ted Nugent to Kalamazoo.

Ted was in rare form. We got to meet Ted back stage and talked briefly about my experience starting a business, and how love to hear Fred Bear on the way into the woods on opening morning of Deer season! He then spoke to a raucous crowd at Miller Auditorium. After sharing his wisdom, he gave us a medley of some of his most famous songs (including Fred Bear) and finished by making his guitar sing the National Anthem.

In between Ted talked for more than two hours about his philosophy on life, his views on politics, and answered any and all questions offered. His talk of the entrepreneurial spirit really hit home with me. He spoke of the American Dream, the lost Michigan Dream, and how we are not truly happy as human beings unless we are able to provide for ourselves. He talked about our basic rights. He focused a lot of talk on the right of the individual to keep and bear arms. He talked passionately about many other rights, all granted to us by our creator (not government.) His thoughts that happiness comes from the freedom in providing for yourself and your family rang especially true. That is a true source of satisfaction, and far more fulfilling than relying on someone else to cure your problems. His passion about independence, individual freedom and personal responsibility are as true today as they were from our Founding Fathers. They are the foundation of our country.

It struck me that often the more government tries to fix problems, the more problems bureaucrats can cause. He spoke clearly of many examples where government ‘fixes’ actually made problems worse; and how too often government and politicians think ‘we the people’ work for them - instead of them working for us.

Ted certainly says it in a way others do not. He can easily be misunderstood or taken out of context. But, his passion is real and his respect for the foundations of our society run deep. They are the essentials that we cannot forget and we have too often strayed from.

Fundraising Off to Great Start

Fundraising started strong and has stayed strong. I am so very pleased and truly humbled by the sacrifices so many have offered so early and so quickly in this race.

On January 31st, 2008 I had to file the required campaign finance disclosure detailing fundraising activity from our organizational filing in October, 2007 through December 31, 2007.

Financial support has included Republican leaders like Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, State Representative Mike Nofs, State Representative Brian Calley, and Ambassador Peter Secchia. More importantly, however, support has poured in from friends, family, and voters throughout the district. More than 115 households including almost 200 individuals have already contributed to our campaign.

These donations have been big and small, and have often been accompanied by very nice personal notes from people giving support they can afford to offer in these challenging times. Some of the smallest donations have been the most touching and had the biggest impact on me.

I am very encouraged that voters are agreeing that our message ‘jobs must come first’ is right. I know we’ve made the right decision to run and am honored that so many supporters are demonstrating they believe I have the right experience and right priorities to bring change to Lansing and our state.

We are poised to surpass $50,000 in total dollars raised this week. As of the report filed at the end of January we had the following update to provide:

I believe that public service should be about serving the public and not personal gain. Molly, Nick, Megan, and I know that this campaign and the service will require personal commitment and sacrifice. Our loan to the campaign is one way we’ve started that commitment, and we know more dedication will come.

We’ll also need to buy multiple pairs of shoes for all the door to door walking we’re doing!

Molly, Nick (13) , Megan (11), and I took a trip East over Labor Day for one last family summer weekend together before school started. With Nick and Megan in middle school and studying American History, we decided to take our trip to Philadelphia and Boston.

What a great time. We all really enjoyed the sights, history, and time together.

Walking through Independence Hall in Philadelphia, taking the walking tour of Boston’s Freedom Trail, and standing in the shadows of our Founding Fathers is truly awe inspiring. Although I’ve been there before, this visit as a Dad and exploring with our children was especially meaningful. Our entire family had time to reflect on how lucky we are that those brave and brilliant men we call Founding Fathers stood tall and risked it all to secure our freedom and establish our great country.

It also gave me time to reflect on the encouragement I’ve received to run for State Representative. Through recent actions, we’ve watched government at various levels restrict our freedom. In this last budget debacle we’ve seen a lack of leadership in the Michigan House, and a lack of fiscal constraint of our government. We’ve seen Lansing claim that they’re broke and have to raise our taxes while they build a shiny new State Police Headquarters.

The task of running and serving as a State Representative will require sacrifice for our family, and is not an easy decision to make. I have a business to run, we have our family to raise, and we have our current volunteer commitments to keep us plenty busy.

But, after being reminded of the sacrifices of our Founding Fathers, I realized the sacrifices we would make truly pale in comparison to theirs. I also realize that it is important that people with the right perspective on government step up and run for offices.

As a faithful family, we had been praying over the decision; asking God for direction and help to make this important decision.

Back at home and at the dinner table after returning from our Labor Day trip, Megan asked, “Dad, when are you going to run for State Representative?” That certainly led to heartfelt discussion over dinner. Megan, Nick, and Molly each individually encouraged me to run because they felt we could do the right things for Michigan and keep the vision of our Founding Fathers in our sights. As a family we decided we would campaign and serve together. We would look forward to community events, going door to door, and meeting voters. We felt I could bring the voice of families, small business operators, and job creators to Lansing.

As a small business owner I decided I could (and should) maintain my business so I can continue to understand how Lansing’s decisions affect keeping, attracting, and creating jobs. As a father, I decided we would balance our family lives with public service. And, as parents Molly & I can teach Nick and Megan that we all have a duty to our community. We can lead by example to demonstrate the importance of concern and action for our neighbors.

We need our state government to set common sense priorities. We need Michigan to turn around; we need to attract, keep, and create jobs for our families.

It was not an easy decision to make, but it is one that is made with firm resolve and solid faith: I will run for State Representative.

Our Founding Fathers’ significant sacrifices have made generations of lives better. I hope our much more moderate sacrifices can improve the lives of our children and grandchildren.
